The names are legendary - Unitas and Berry, Manning and Harrison, Shula and Dungy. The games -- from the "GREATEST GAME EVER PLAYED", to the "MIDNIGHT MIRACLE" are unforgettable. Now NFL Films brings them all to you as part of the "History of the Colts" DVD. Disc one brings you the full history of the team's BALTIMORE era, including the 1958 and '59 Champions and the incredible story of Super Bowl V. Disc two details the Colts arrival in the HOOSIER state, the incredible would-be comeback in the 1995 AFC Championship Game and the high-flying Peyton Manning era. With over six hours of action spanning more than 50 years of Colts Football, "THE HISTORY OF THE COLTS" DVD is a must-have for any pro football fan.
Colts: The Complete History is a tale of two cities. The first disc is a 65-minute history of the team in Baltimore, from its woeful start in the 1950s to the building of a powerhouse led by coach Weeb Ewbank, Alan Ameche, and ninth-round draft pick Johnny Unitas. They went on to the 1958 championship, later dubbed "the greatest game ever played," and were embraced by the blue-collar town. Later years included Super Bowl III under new coach Don Shula, the last-minute thrills of Super Bowl V, Joe Thomas's subsequent dismantling of the team that led to Unitas' final game in Baltimore, the dawning of the Bert Jones and Ted Marchibroda era, and, on March 28, 1984, the Mayflower vans that departed for Indianapolis. Among the interviewees are WR Raymond Berry, DT Art Donovan, DE Gino Marchetti, coach Don Shula, RB Lenny Moore, and executive Ernie Accorsi. Filling out disc 1 are 54 minutes of featurettes and an hourlong "Greatest Games" spotlight on the 1958 championship. The 45-minute history on disc 2 focuses on the Colts' 1984 welcome to Indianapolis and the subsequent development of the team. Again starting with some lean years, the Colts traded for Eric Dickerson and drafted Jeff George, Steve Emtman, and Marshall Faulk. After a run to the 1995 AFC Championship game, the arrival of superstars Peyton Manning, Marvin Harrison, and Edgerrin James as well as coach Tony Dungy helped the Colts battle the Steelers in the January 2006 playoffs. Interviewees include Marchibroda, Jim Harbaugh, and Jim Irsay, the son of the team's late owner, Robert Irsay, but none of the current players. The 140 minutes of bonus features include the 2003 "Monday Night Miracle" when Dungy returned to Tampa Bay, the 2005 Game of the Week in which Manning and Harrison made history, an interview with Manning, and shorter pieces on coach Jim Mora (discussing his infamous meltdowns), and Dwight Freeney. --David Horiuchi
This is Michael Olesker's nostalgic reminiscence of 1958, the year the Baltimore Colts defeated the New York Giants in sudden-death overtime in a game that still grips the emotions of Baltimoreans. Olesker recaptures the city’s love affair with the Colts in a series of thoughtful and colorful stories that give voice to such notable characters as Colts players Johnny Unitas and Art Donovan, politicians Tommy D’Alesandro and Jack Pollack, entertainers Buddy Deane and Royal Parker, sportscasters Chuck Thompson and Vince Bagli, and filmmaker John Waters. The Colts’ Baltimore also traces the changing cultural landscape of the city just entering an age of revolution—a time when schools were being racially integrated, rock and roll played on the radio, and Baltimore was planning to renew the dilapidated downtown.Revealing warm ties between Baltimore and its beloved Colts, Olesker's writing makes the events of 1958 seem like only yesterday.
In late March of 1984, a moving company secretly packed up the Baltimore Colts' belongings and drove off in the darkness of the early morning, leaving a city of deeply devoted fans in shock and disbelief. Through the eyes of members of the Colts Marching Band, Academy Award-winning director Barry Levinson illustrates how fans cope with losing the team they love in this ESPN® Films 30 for 30: The Band That Wouldn't Die DVD.
In this personal and moving book, William Gildea blends reminiscences of his boyhood in Baltimore with profiles of famous Colts players such as Johnny Unitas, Lenny Moore, Gino Marchetti, Raymond Berry, Art Donovan, Y. A. Tittle, and others. Recalling his relationship with his father and the love they shared for a team, Gildea evokes the spirit of 1950s America, when professional athletes were workaday neighbors and community was more than a political slogan. This is a story, too, about the geography of the heart: why something so simple as a team can arouse such emotional attachments, how a group of players with horseshoes on their helmets could have been part of the generational glue between parent and child. Written with feeling and insight, this is an affecting tribute to a team and a time etched in memory.
